So many Questions??? August 16, 2007
Ok so I have a whole bunch of blog topics that I am going to cram into one blog first of…the update.
So I have had a long couple weeks I am back to the racing starting on Friday…After Super week I took a break. The only week I may have off between now and the end of the Olympics. Eeesh that is a bit of time…fun times for all. Anyway the break lead to a bit of a body shut down and I have spend some time being indecisive about being ill for about a week. But that is the nature of the sport…this time of year.
So now it is back to the racing. I am on my way to T town …oh my flight from TO is cancelled and there is no alternative…tomorrow ok. Well that is a bit of a downer. Lucky for me and the airline, I have great friends in TO that will put me up at a minutes notice.
Finally, I have a question for all your readers…so listen up you two. When can you retire? Don’t worry I am not that blown out. I keep reading these little news articles about cyclist retiring…young cyclists…like U23 or younger. And that is fine…retire…but when is it RETIRMENT and when is it just QUITING. Just because you smoke for 20 years and then stop you are not a retired smoker. You don’t go and put out a press release about it. I started thinking about it. I guess to me in order to retire you need to do something significant…I am not sure what that is. But when you leave the sport people should look at your time in the sport and say you lived up to your potential…made the most of your time. I don’t know, I guess I am just struggling with the idea of a someone retiring who has barley had a career… I stopped wrestling after 10 years and a silver medal at nationals…but I still say I quite Wrestling…I didn’t announce to the wrestling world that I am leaving the sport and all should rise and acknowledge my career. What do you think…what do you have to do in your cycling career before you can “retire” and not just quit.

Hey Zach! Light Weight! I love reading your blog, so it’s cool you put up an interesting question. But before I answer, it sounds like you’re doing awesome down in T-town! So keep it up! YEPP!!!
Ok, it’s cool you asked the question about retiring/quiting, because I’ve had that internal discusion before. I think if you are proud of what you’ve done with the sport, and went after your goals and dreams with everything you had, then I think you can say you’re retiring. Mind you, it doesn’t mean you have to say, “look at me, I’m retiring, I’m moving on.” And announce it to the world. You can do it quitely.
Maybe the main reason why I wouldn’t use the word quiting is because it is a negative word, and it implies giving up.
So maybe you can just say you are stopping?
Good luck in T-town dude! Keep up the ass kicking!! Yeah Buddy!
